Huawei finally announced the much-awaited 5G foldable smartphone dubbed as Huawei Mate X at MWC 2019 event in Barcelona on Sunday. It is the company’s first smartphone with a folding display. The Huawei Mate X is announced days after the Samsung unveiled its foldable device, the Samsung Galaxy Fold. This Huawei foldable smartphone is launched alongside the Huawei MateBook X Pro which is a thin and light laptop featuring a 91 percent screen-to-body ratio.
“This phone is not only for today for 5G but also for future 5G. On all the benchmarks you can see the performance, the speed is the fastest for 5G in the world,” said Richard Yu, head of Huawei’s consumer business group.
Huawei Mate X 5G Foldable Smartphone: Specifications, features
The Huawei Mate X has a 6.6-inch OLED display when folded that becomes an 8-inch OLED screen when it is opened. When folded, the smartphone has a 6.38-inch screen at the back, which can be used too. Huawei Mate X features a thicker portion on one side which helps to grip your device and on one end there is a USB Type C port for charging. It features a Falcon Wing design with a stretchable hinge for a smooth and flat finish on both sides of the device.
In terms of hardware, the Huawei Mate X is powered by a Kirin 980 7nm SoC with 720 MHz ARM Mali-G76MP10 GPU, Balong 5000 5G modem. It runs on Android 9.0 Pie-based EMUI 9.1.1 OS.
The device comes with triple rear camera setup – a 40MP rear camera with f/1.8 aperture, 16MP Ultra Wide Angle lens, 8MP Telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture. Interesting, the same cameras are used for taking selfies and other video calling purposes.
When open it is just 5.4mm thick and 11mm thick when closed. With the larger display, users can do side-by-side browsing and multi-tasking between two apps or tabs and it’s clear with the 5G connectivity that Huawei is positioning these devices as focused on allowing users to increase productivity.
The Huawei Mate X features 8GB of RAM, 512GB of internal storage and expandable memory up to 256GB with NM card. It has hybrid dual-SIM support, dual speakers, and side-mounted fingerprint sensor. The Huawei Mate X has a 4,500mAh battery and it supports 55W fast charging. Huawei claims that the Mate X battery can be charged 85 percent in 30 minutes.
Price and Availability: The HUAWEI Mate X comes in Interstellar Blue color, is priced at 2299 Euros (US$ 2607 / Rs. 1,85,220 approx.) and will roll out from mid-2019.
